Context

BrachyAcademy is Elekta’s global educational platform for healthcare professionals working in brachytherapy, a form of radiation therapy used to treat cancer. Through clinical workshops, webinars, observational visits and an extensive e-library, it connects professionals with specialist knowledge and opportunities to learn from one another.

Its audience ranges from professionals taking their first steps in image-guided brachytherapy to experienced specialists looking to develop their expertise. As its educational offering expanded, Elekta needed a platform that could make this knowledge more accessible, support its international community and give BrachyAcademy a stronger identity of its own.

The strategic tension

BrachyAcademy had built an extensive collection of educational resources, but its website made that knowledge difficult to navigate. Workshops, webinars, training opportunities and specialist content competed for attention in an extensive menu, with little distinction between what was important to different visitors.

The challenge was not simply to present the content more attractively. A professional exploring brachytherapy for the first time has different needs from an experienced specialist looking for advanced training. Elekta needed a platform that could serve both audiences without overwhelming either of them.

The challenge

The previous website had grown into a large collection of information without a sufficiently intuitive structure. Important resources were sometimes several clicks away, while limited categorisation and filtering made it difficult for visitors to find what was relevant to their role, experience and clinical interests.

The platform also needed to do more than organise content. It had to bring together different learning formats, educational centres and a professional community, combining publicly accessible information with exclusive content for registered members. All of this needed to feel like one coherent experience, supported by a distinctive identity that remained recognisably connected to Elekta.

Our approach

We started with the information architecture. Together with Elekta, we mapped the educational offering, identified the needs of different audiences and reconsidered how visitors should navigate the platform. Through several rounds of wireframes, we developed a clearer hierarchy and worked through the user journeys for workshops, webinars, educational centres, the e-library and community registration.

Once the structure was established, we developed a new brand identity and translated it into the website design. The visual direction combined Elekta’s existing colour palette with additional colours, typography and imagery that gave BrachyAcademy its own character. The result was designed to feel innovative and medically credible, while remaining approachable and personal.

Strategic choices

We simplified the navigation and brought workshops, webinars, observational visits and the e-library together in one Academy. Search and filtering help professionals quickly find relevant content, while dedicated educational centre pages and community features connect them with specialists and additional learning opportunities.

We gave BrachyAcademy its own identity while retaining Elekta’s core colours, introducing a distinctive logo, softer gradients and photography of healthcare professionals. Alongside the Academy, we developed About Brachytherapy, a separate, accessible information website designed to help patients and their families understand the treatment.

The result

BrachyAcademy is now a global learning platform that brings its educational offering together in one place. Professionals can explore clinical workshops, webinars, observational visits and specialist resources, discover educational centres and join a community built around sharing knowledge and experience.

The new structure has also made the platform easier for Elekta’s team to use and maintain. Feedback from the team has been positive, particularly around the clearer organisation of information, improved navigation and more coherent presentation of the Academy’s offering.

Following launch, our collaboration has continued through maintenance and further development. This allows the platform to evolve alongside its educational programme and the needs of its international audience.

Reflection

Making specialist knowledge accessible is not about removing its complexity. It is about organising that complexity so people can find what matters to them.

For BrachyAcademy, that meant approaching the project as an educational platform rather than a conventional corporate website. By bringing structure, user experience and visual identity together, we helped Elekta make its expertise more accessible to healthcare professionals around the world.

It is also the kind of project that reflects what we value at Mars: using digital design and technology to make complex information easier to understand, particularly when that knowledge has the potential to improve people’s lives.
